Complex X-ray Spin Profiles of PQ Gem

PQ Gem Spin Profile Plot

The energy-resolved X-ray spin profiles of PQ Gem. Data are from the 1994 November ASCA observation and the ephemeris is that of Hellier 1997 which uses the larger of two I-band maxima as the definition of phase 0.0. Would anybody care to explain how such complex profiles can be generated?
