We will discuss the relevance of the solar flare gamma ray line spectroscopy to the variety of basic solar physics problems, ranging from elemental abundances, solar atmospheric dynamics to solar flare and solar wind particle acceleration. We will also talk about the requirement for additional gamma ray data (e.g. from CGRO) that will be needed to complement the HESSI gamma ray observations.
