Koji's Picturesque Past

April 1979 - March 1983
Koji attended the Department of Physics, University of Tokyo, and graduated with a Rigakushi degree (Bachelor of Science) in March, 1983.
October 1983 - September 1986
For his graduate studies, Koji went to England, and earned a D.Phil degree from the Department of Astrophysics, University of Oxford, in December 1986 (the University considers the degree ceremony, which Koji participated in October 1987, to be when the degree is actually awarded, but that's one example of the quirkiness of Oxford). His supervisor ("Thesis Advisor" in American) was Phil Charles, and his thesis work was on "Spectroscopic Studies of AM Her Type Systems," using optical/IR data taken in Australia, the Canaries, South Africa, and Hawaii. Many of these observations were a part of multi-wavelength campains involving X-rays (EXOSAT) and UV (IUE).
October 1986-October 1989
Koji then spent 3 years as a post-doc at Mullard Space Science Laboratory, University College London (but is located in rural Surrey, near Dorking). Although he did have some duties relating to ROSAT WFC Extreme UV Survey, Koji was able to spend most of his time on his own research interests. He continued optical observations at the abovementioned observatories, and was also involved in a few Ginga hard X-ray observations.
November 1989 - December 1991
Koji then moved to California and joined what was shortly to become the Center for EUV Astrophysics at University of California at Berkeley. He worked mostly on the EUVE all-sky survey pipeline software, but he managed to do some observations at Lick Observatory, and with IUE.
