After years of rennovation, they have opened the new South Wing of Terminal 1 at Narita on 2006 June 2, and re-arranged the airlines. Judging by the brief descriptions I've seen, transfers at Narita should have become much easier, while passengers departing from or arriving into Narita just need to make sure where the airline in question is located now.
This is used mostly by Star Alliance partner airlines - as far as I can tell, all Star Alliance airlines except Air New Zealand use this wing, including domestic flights of All-Nippon Airways, while several non-alliance airlines that are rarely used by X-ray astronomers visiting Japan (Turkish Airlines appears to be the most major of these) also use this wing.
