4. The Rossi X-Ray Timing Explorer

The Rossi X-Ray Timing Explorer was launched in December 1996. It carries three telescopes. The All Sky Monitor (ASM) provides continuous monitoring of the X-ray sky in the 2-10 keV band. The observatory has been designed to slew quickly and bring its other two telescopes to bear on targets of opportunity. The ASM also continuously monitors the intensities of bright sources and can be used to ensure that an observation takes place when the target is in the appropriate intensity state.
